Open mouth, insert foot. You know you have said too much when the reply you get makes you feel about one inch tall.
A man was ordering some food at a fast food restaurant and asked the cashier if there was a discount for members of the military. A rude woman behind him decided to stick her nose where it didn’t belong and told him he shouldn’t be looking for ‘special privileges.’
Clearly, the ignorant woman has no idea what a ‘privilege’ is – so, the young soldier tells her what a privilege is.
No one deserves to be treated like this soldier was, thankfully, the woman’s face was blocked out, and she will likely go unrecognized. Can you imagine being this woman now and seeing the how the country has responded to her ignorance?
Nov. 22, 2016, started out as just another day for retired Navy Seal John Brophy. He and his dog, a retired service animal named Maggie, were visiting a friend in the Las Olas Isles neighborhood of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. John and Maggie were regular visitors to the area, familiar sights to those living in the neighborhood. It was no surprise when John’s friend took Maggie for a walk.
But that sedate stroll soon ended with a shock. As Maggie rounded a bush and walked out into the road, a truck struck her. Brophy came running. With the help of his friend, who happened to be an emergency-room nurse, he bundled Maggie into his vehicle and began to drive.
Unsure where to take his beloved pet, he frantically called a friend who urged him to go to Lauderdale Veterinary Specialists, a 24-hour emergency center. At the time, though, he wasn’t sure Maggie would make it.
“Her tongue was just kind of hanging out, her eyes were rolling back,” Brophy told The Sun-Sentinel. “I definitely thought I was losing her.”
Maggie made it, but the doctors at Lauderdale Veterinary Specialists made a terrible discovery during their examination. Not only was she in hypovolemic shock, she had sustained severe damage to her left hind leg.
The leg injured would prove particularly problematic for Maggie. In addition to multiple fractures, one section was so badly pulverized that the bones didn’t even show up on an x-ray. The veterinarians did the only thing they could. After Maggie was stabilized, they amputated the limb.
Many dogs can function fairly well with only three legs, but Dr. Jennifer Bibevski of Lauderdale Veterinary Services expressed concern that Maggie could eventually develop hip trouble. That was when they took the impressive step of fitting Maggie with her own special prosthesis.

Other than a small limp, Maggie achieved full mobility with her new leg. However, at a cost of $20,000, it wasn’t what anyone would call cheap.
Family and friends chipped in to help Maggie and Brophy. Lauderdale Veterinary Services itself covered the balance of the bill through its The Pet’s Tree of Hope fund, a special provision for pet owners unable to fully pay for an animal’s treatment.
For Brophy, it seemed almost miraculous. “I couldn’t be more thankful for the help, love and support that I have received since the accident,” he told WSVN.
“That’s what we’re here for,” Dr. Bibevski said. “Anything that we can do to help the pets and their owners is what makes our day successful.”
When customers at a Bakersfield, California Jack in the Box ordered food at the drive thru for the past few weeks, they had no idea what was right behind the thin wall of the restaurant. When cashier Alex Mesta was working the line, he had hidden something behind the cashier station that no one but him had known. As he was handing out food to paying customer, something else was going on behind the scenes.
For every one of his shifts, Mesta was up to no good. Then his manager came across it all by accident, and was sick at what Mesta was up to…
After his boss was randomly reviewing surveillance footage, Mesta was fired without notice. The supervisor spotted the employee engaging in illicit behavior behind the cash register. Because Mesta was only earning a minimum wage, he could care less about losing his dead-end job. And he shows no remorse for doing the disturbing thing he was up to behind the register.
Plus, he already has a plan to get another regular paycheck. But he will miss something else a whole lot more than he does the money.
As one of the late night shift workers, Mesta had a lot of downtime on the job. And as the proverb goes, idle hands are the devil’s workshop.
During the shift, Alex Mesta met one customer who came in more frequently than others. He learned that the older gentleman was a veteran of the United States military. Through conversation, Alex befriended the veteran. And then he offered the hero a cup of coffee for free – as a way to show appreciation for the men and women who serve our great nation.
Several times each week, the old veteran would return to the Jack in the Box to get his free cup of coffee. But he stayed for the conversation with the talkative cashier.
Because the restaurant did not even charge $1 for a cup of coffee, Mesta did not mind giving away the establishments beverage for free. He did not pay for the cup, he gave it away for nothing.
Meanwhile, the veteran appreciated Alex’s kindness and the respect he had for his elders. There aren’t many 19-year-old men out there looking out for older veterans. Everything was fine until Alex made a wrong move one night.
Because the establishment had leftover tacos that were to be thrown away, Alex through he could give them to the veteran. Without wanting to waste food and put the war hero out, he handed over the tacos for free. Just days later, Alex was called into his manager’s office and fired on the spot.
The patriotic teen explained the situation. But the manager refused to listen. Between the free tacos and coffee, Alex had cost the company under $10. If Jack in the Box cared about veterans, they might have allowed Alex to pay the cost of the items he gave away for free. Instead, they fired him.
“I know what I did wasn’t right to them,” Alex said. “But to me, it felt right.”
When the incident hit social media, the public lashed out at Jack in the Box. Nevertheless, the unpatriotic company refused to change their policy and did not rehire Alex. They fired back at the disgruntled public with a statement that read that the firing had
Despite all the outrage, after the incident hit social media, Jack in the Box didn’t back down on their “nothing to do with a guest’s military experience,” although they admitted that Alex was fired for “mishandling funds.”
Ricky Barksdale recently won a “#1 Decent Dude” trophy. You likely imagine he must have done something pretty incredible to receive such an award, right?
Barksdale has an impressive résumé consisting of experience as an Army veteran, actor, stuntman, and mixed martial artist. Yet, he did not need to use any special skills to earn the trophy.
Yvonne Lin awarded Barksdale with this trophy for a surprisingly simple reason. He offered his seat to Lin on the subway when he noticed she was pregnant.
Lin always had a congratulations card in her purse during her first pregnancy. She planned to give it to the first man who gave up his seat on the subway once she realized how shockingly rare this act of kindness was.
Lin has a daily, two-hour commute to work on the subway. As hard as it is to believe, considering the frequency of her rides on the subway, not one man her entire pregnancy offered her a seat.
She never got to hand out the congratulatory card. Interestingly, many women offered her a seat.
When she became pregnant a second time, she wanted the award to be greater than a card with the knowledge that she may never be able to hand it out for a second time. She created a custom trophy that read “#1 DECENT DUDE, First Man to Offer Subway Seat to Pregnant Woman throughout Two Pregnancies.”
Every single day for eight months, the trophy sat untouched in her work bag. Just when Lin lost almost all hope that she would encounter any “decent dudes” on the subway, Barksdale offered his seat to her.
Lin was pleasantly surprised and accepted his offer. She handed him the trophy, and Barksdale was, “adorably sweet and embarrassed,” to receive it, according to Lin.
Barksdale was shocked to find out he was the first man in almost two years to offer her a seat. Of course, he certainly did not think he deserved a trophy or any recognition for simply doing what seemed to be the reasonable action when a pregnant, elderly, or disabled person is forced to stand.
Were you as shocked as Lin, Barksdale, and we were to hear how unusual it was for a man to give up his seat on the subway? We would love to know what your reaction was to the rarity of men offering their seats on the subway when you share this story!
Honoring our nation’s veterans is something that we need to get better at, no doubt. Volunteering to protect our way of life and defend peace and human rights around the world is a noble endeavor, and one that does not pay so well.
And the state of the US Veteran’s Administration has been lamented for decades without ever seeming to get better, no matter who is in charge.
Well, we just found a story about a veteran who was availing herself of one of the few tiny perks afforded to members of the military, a nice parking space, and the nasty note left by yet another parking lot busybody.
We are all sick of hearing about people that have nothing better to do with themselves than write nasty notes to leave anonymously on other people’s cars, but you are going to love this vet’s response.
Rebecca Landis Hayes stood up for her country with pride and dedication in the United States Navy for eight years. Now, living back in Concord, North Carolina, she has decided to stand up for herself, after some jerk leaves a snarky note on her car in a grocery store parking lot.
Recently, after returning to her car from shopping, she found a nasty little note stuck to her windshield.
The anonymous (of course) note said:
“This parking space is reserved for veterans, lady. Learn to read and have some respect.”
Now, this is the 21st century, and veterans come in every size and gender. And some people just need to stop making assumptions while they waste time in parking lots.
Ms. Hayes reacted to the snarky and ill-informed note by posting it, along with a comment, on her Facebook page, saying:
This 19-year-old man was waiting in line at the store. He noticed that the elderly man standing in front him was a veteran and started talking to him. He also shook his hand to thank him for serving for the country.
After the veteran paid, the young man asked the cashier to watch his cart so he could help the elderly veteran carry his stuff to the car.
However, the cashier refused to watch it for him. What happened at the end is completely unexpected. This story has gotten over 700,000 shares.

I truly believe that dogs deserve more credit than humans sometimes… They never cease to amaze me with what they can do for people! This big Rottweiler is most likely more helpful than any human in this man’s life.
In this video, we’re shown how this big dog is a big help for many people who suffer from PTSD.
Post-traumatic stress disorder is a disease that is triggered in your daily life after being a witness to, or experiencing yourself, a terrifying event.
This disease affects millions of people in the world, especially those we honor who have thankfully come home from war. But not a lot of people know about its severe reality, or know how to deal with it.
In order to help cope with this disease and these memories, some people can get service dogs which are trained to prevent or stop anxiety attacks and depression that overcome their humans.
In this very short and simple video, we see a very intimate and important relationship between a man and his service dog. I am so thankful for these animals and all of the people who are surviving this horrible disease. They deserve so much love, and it’s nice to see all of that love being given in this video.

Army Lt. Col. Robert Risdon recently went to Taco Bell to grab some dinner. He was already sitting down to eat when two young boys walked into the restaurant, but not to order. The boys — one 9 and the other 13 — were there to sell homemade desserts in an effort to raise money for their local church. But Army Lt. Col. Risdon noticed the boys looked cold and wet. He asked them if they had had anything to eat for dinner yet, to which they replied no.
What happened next was captured on camera by another customer, Jason, who was so affected that he uploaded the video to Facebook and begged others to share it.

What happened next is going viral, and it was all captured on camera by another customer named Jason. To accompany the video he posted on Facebook, Jason writes: “I was in a taco bell tonight when two kids came in trying to sell home made desserts for money. I over heard a soldier ask the kids if they were hungry and told them to follow him to the counter, he would buy them dinner.
I had to video it and share. Our troops are always taking care of us. Thank u LTC Robert Risdon please please share this….I heard the little one say I want to be just like u when I grow up and saluted him.”
“I’m kinda embarrassed and humbled by the praise and don’t need it,” Army Lt. Col. Risdon told The Huffington Post. “I am a believer that we live in the best country in the world with the best people and that acts of kindness happen every day.” It’s people like this who make the world go ’round. This soldier deserves all the praise and recognition he gets.
