Doctor Tells Dad to Take Picture of ‘Miracle’ Baby after Seeing the Umbilical Cord

Pregnancy is supposed to be a joyful time. The beginning of new life, both literal for the child and metaphorical for the parents, is exciting and thrilling. But growth of a new life is complex and complicated, and extremely delicate. So many things can go wrong with the process, causing various tragic outcomes.

Some of these incidents are caused by genetic defects, diseases, or problems with appropriate nutrients.

Some, however, can be caused by a simple knot. If a fetus is particularly active, it can occasionally wrap itself in its own umbilical cord. Where it ends up is entirely unpredictable.

The umbilical cord is the connection between the mother and child, brings nutrients and removes waste, and ensures the baby develops with everything it needs.

In many cases, it can work its way around the head or neck, causing significant developmental problems or birth complications. However, it can also end up not around the baby at all.

Sometimes, it can tie itself in a knot. There are horror stories surrounding these tragic occurrences, and it can be as devastating as fetal death.

One Redditor, though, shared an image in 2015 of the miracle that was his son.

The umbilical cord had been tied in a perfect knot, and he was a perfectly healthy, happy little newborn. He cried, he could breathe on his own, everything.

According to the post on Reddit by “azathothfrog,” the doctor said, “Hurry up dad, take a picture your baby is a miracle.”

So he did! He shared it to Reddit, specifically the subpage called “Pics,” and got a stream of comments and stories. The top one, at the time of writing, is heart-wrenching, and emphasizes the miracle of the original poster’s baby.

The commenter claims to be an anesthesiologist, and says that in his more than 15 years of practice, the saddest story involves one with a knotted umbilical cord.

The mother had gone into her OB/GYN the day before she was scheduled for a cesarean section to make sure everything was ready. The following day, before the birth, they couldn’t find a heart beat or movement.

The umbilical cord had knotted and the baby had died during the night. Of course, it was an absolute heartbreak that I’m sure haunts all involved to this day.

But for this miracle baby and miracle family, providence was on their side. We wish them the best of luck in the future, and we wish the little boy a happy, healthy life ahead.
