When Stephanie Smit, 35, gave birth to her son Isaiah everything was going perfectly. Things were smooth and she was learning what it takes to be a parent one task at a time. Stephanie couldn’t have been happier and prouder of her newborn baby boy.
But then Isaiah broke out with a red rash. She thought it would go away after a while, but then Isaiah’s skin starts to get worse and all of a sudden, the little infant’s life is thrown in danger. And mom realizes that parenting is not only good times, but struggles and tragedies as well.
She rushed him to the doctors and discovered a shocking diagnosis…
The rashes started when Isaiah was about three-months old. Stephanie quickly determined their cause. He seemed to break out every time he was near or exposed to intense odors or perfumes. They would only make the irritation the baby experienced worse and he would cry.
Sometimes, his rash would become so bad that the little boy’s epidermis would start to bleed.
All the doctors agreed. Isaiah had a bad case of eczema. He was prescribed steroidal based ointment. When Stephanie rubbed it on his little body, it seemed to work. The rash went away. But then the eczema came rushing back – and suddenly, Stephanie is living a new nightmare.
Before long, the red rash has returned and gotten even worse. After a short while, the steroidal ointment stops being effective. The eczema returns stronger than ever.
Doctors are baffled. Then the baby’s hair started to fall out. They applied stronger treatments but his skin did not respond to it as planned.
“The doctors said it was just eczema. Many doctors came in and out of our room. We saw a GI doctor who told me I was poisoning my son with my breast milk and I needed to stop immediately,” Stephanie said.
Stephanie did everything the doctors asked her to do. But his skin got worse and worse for the next five months. Then little sores began to burst open and the baby was in constant pain.
Before long, Stephanie is avoiding normal activities because her son needs her help. She is applying ointment and bandages to protect his sensitive skin. At night, his hands had to be covered so he doesn’t scratch himself.
“It was like he had no skin,” says Stephanie. “He was constantly in pain. One time it was so bad that I thought: if this is to be his life, then take him to the next one.”
Because the doctors had failed, Stephanie turned to the internet. Then she learned about something called “steroid withdrawal” and saw pictures of babies that seemed to be suffering just like Isaiah was.
“There they were talking about the side-effects of the steroids and how it could make skin problems worse when you stop taking them.”
Stephanie stopped using the steroidal ointment. Instead, she used home-made lotions and creams with natural ingredients.
After just 10 months, Isaiah’s skin is like new. The cause of all his suffering was the prescription the doctors kept ordering Stephanie to use on her baby!
“We saw 35 doctors. They all said that it was eczema. I want to show them the pictures where you can see how Isaiah’s skin has recovered.”
