A McDonald’s restaurant in Huddersfield, England, reportedly refused to let a man with Crohn’s disease use its restroom in an emergency on Aug. 11.
Despite showing staff a special “Can’t Wait” card for those with conditions like his, security allegedly kicked 20-year-old Liam Seacombe out of the fast food restaurant anyway, the Daily Mail reports.
A “Can’t Wait” card was given to Seacombe by the Crohn’s and Colitis UK organization.
The organization’s website explains it is given to those in England with inflammatory bowel disorders, which cause people with the conditions to suddenly and urgently need to use the restrooms.
The card is designed to help sufferers access restrooms immediately and without confusion or embarrassment.
“The anxiety of not being able to get to a toilet on time or worse can be more crippling than suffering from Crohn’s itself,” said Seacombe.
Despite explaining both the card and his illness, staff still refused to help him. It was almost 3 a.m. and the staff told him the store and the bathrooms were closed.
“I explained to them about the card and my illness, but insisting that the toilets were completely inaccessible, they ushered the security guards to remove me from the restaurant for simply wanting to use the toilet,” Seacombe said, adding the manager responded “rudely” to him.
Seacombe said the experience was humiliating and that he was shocked at his treatment.
“I was mortified that a company as large as McDonald’s could be so uneducated about a disease that is rapidly becoming more prominent and heard of,” he said. “I wonder how another human being could refuse someone in desperate need the right to use a toilet, who was already numb with embarrassment to ask in the first place.”
Now Seacombe is speaking out against McDonald’s, urging the restaurant and other businesses to take “positive steps to remove the barriers that could be faced because of disabilities, both visible and invisible.”
“To me this feels like a setback, when Olympic swimmers Siobhan-Marie O’Connor and Kathleen Baker both won silver medals at Rio 2016, raising invaluable awareness for ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease,” he added.
Meanwhile a McDonald’s spokesman has apologized for the incident: “We would like to apologize for any embarrassment or upset caused to Mr. Seacombe and encourage him to get in contact with our Customer Services team.”
