A man was arrested after reportedly having unprotected sex with a woman he met at a bar in Bethesda, Maryland, and not disclosing his HIV-positive status.

The suspect, Daniel Cleaves, had sex with the unidentified female victim over the course of three days, The Washington Post reported.

When Cleaves left a bag behind, he called the woman and asked her to look for a document. While searching for the document, she came across his medical records.

  • “Do you have HIV?” the woman asked via text, reports CrimeFeed.
  • “No, why?” he responded.

It was after she told him that she knew of his status that 28-year-old Cleaves admitted to her that he was HIV-positive.

“Can’t believe you didn’t tell me … I’m going to the hospital right now,” she texted him.

“I’m not a bad person. I just made a mistake,” he responded. “I just don’t want to stop talking to you because of this.”

The woman was tested, according to court records, but it’s not clear what the results were because of privacy laws, the Daily Mail reports.

Cleaves was arrested and charged with possibly infecting the woman.

Staff at the bar where Cleaves met the woman, said he was a “familiar face,” and that they were concerned he might have slept with other women.

Cleaves was previously accused in separate sexual assault cases in Richmond and Virginia Beach. Charges were not filed in those counties.
