Leanne Allerton is a mother and YouTuber. She has been pretty transparent about breastfeeding all four of her kids. Her latest video, featuring Leanne breastfeeding her 4-year-old daughter Poppy, has gotten almost 1 million views.
“I post breastfeeding videos when I feel like talking about things, because there will always be someone out there who is going through the same thing,” Leanne explained to Daily Mail. “You get a lot of nice suggestions but also a lot of abuse — those I tend to block and delete.”
While many are supportive, some of the comments have called Leanne “sickening” or a “slut,” saying her girl Poppy is too old to breastfeed. Leanna also continues to breastfeed her son, who is 5 years old.
“People say to me that Poppy relies on me too much, but it is not about that,” she said. “It’s our time, and it benefits her. It is just our routine and our life, and it’s just the way it is.”
Leanne believes that breastfeeding should stop when the child is old enough to understand what is happening. She offers her older son, Georgie, as an example.
“With Georgie, I just spoke with him, explaining he was becoming a big boy, and it was time for him to stop,” she said. “But I will miss it when Poppy and I completely stop.”
Regardless of how you feel, the American Academy of Pediatrics believes breastfeeding toddlers is fine. They recommend that the mother and child breastfeed until they decide to stop, so, in this regard, every family will be different.
“It’s completely appropriate that a mother should avail herself to her infant or toddler,” Dr. Lori Winter, of the American Academy of Pediatrics told ABC News. “That’s in no way damaging to the child.”
What do you think of breastfeeding children as old as 5 years old?
