Doctors Knew It Was Bad, But Once They Saw Her The First Time They Knew It Was Record Breaking

Imagine being told that you have the largest cyst that has ever been seen by specialists and doctors everywhere?

One woman in Mexico got this news when she went to the doctor with a giant ovarian cyst that took up 95% of her abdomen and weighed as much as ten newborn babies. Over only a matter of eleven months, the woman’s cyst had grown so fast and so furious it looked as if she was on the verge of giving birth to several babies.

Dr. Hanson Viana from Mexico’s General Hospital was the brave specialist who took on the challenge of removing the cyst which was thought to have had toxic fluid inside. The cyst was so large that she was at risk of having her organs crushed by the mass and the added body weight made her a possible victim of heart failure.

Because it was pressing on her intestines, she was only able to eat tiny amounts of food at a time, and it was pressing on two main vessels which is another reason that it could’ve led to heart failure. She had major trouble walking and breathing which ultimately led to a poor quality of life…

“This is the biggest cyst I have ever operated on,” said Dr. Hanson. “It was so big that it took up 95% of the patient’s abdomen. It’s really rare to operate on a cyst this big, it measured half a metre in diameter and the circumference was 157 cm.”

It needed to be removed so fast that doctors didn’t drain the fluid first, making it the largest of its kind.

When the patient first discovered the cyst she was pretty overweight so she started dieting but her stomach continued to grow as her arms and legs thinned out. This was a clear sign that there was a problem.

“When I met her, she could only walk a couple of steps before getting agitated and feeling like she was struggling to breathe because the cyst was crushing her lungs,” said Hanson, who believes that her health would’ve gotten far worse had they not operated.

He believes that she would’ve been severely malnourished, unable to move and eat and there is no clear answer for how long she could’ve gone on living in that condition.

The patient didn’t suffer a terrible recovery and she actually walked out of the hospital two days following the surgery. It was a reduction of 73 pounds so she felt like she was floating when she was so used to lugging around all that additional weight.

As soon as the cyst was removed, her body was able to relax due to the absence of compression that the cyst had been causing.

Six months following the surgery, the doctor met with her and she was fully recovered and was able to walk upright without any struggles.

Her abdomen was flat and she no longer needed the assistance of a walking stick. Because the patient opted to take the cyst out prior to draining it, it left a pretty hefty scar, but she is certainly much better off than she was just six months ago.
