Heartbreaking Photo Of 10-Year-Old Is Going Viral On Facebook. Here’s The Story Behind It

Having to witness a child go fight cancer is probably one of the hardest things a parent can go through.

And those children who have to suffer through the pain and testing and treatments that go along with the disease, are some of the bravest around.

Drake Medinger is no exception. At age five he was diagnosed with leukemia, and since then he has had to undergo several spinal taps, blood transfusions, surgeries and chemotherapy.

When his cancer went into remission, he and his family celebrated, elated that they had overcome the biggest hardship that they had been faced with.

And then, six months later, Drake was told that he had testicular cancer and he would have to start that brutal fight all over again.

Imagine, thinking you are in the clear, and then you learn that you have to start all over. Drake’s mom, Jessica was there by her boy’s side through everything.

She has been the one with him through the whole fight, and recently, she got real with the world, in a Facebook post that went viral…

The post was a photo of ten-year-old Drake wearing a pull up as he stood in the bathroom, clearly in pain, hovering over the toilet…

Along with the photo, Jessica shared the following comment, which instantly went viral…

“For anyone battling cancer or enduring chemotherapy. For anyone going through this horrible disease. It is about to get real, real hard and real quick.

“The picture I’m posting is from this morning, and before you scream and cry ‘why would she post a picture of him in a pull up, the indecency’, well 1.

It doesn’t show more than swimming jammers would and 2. Because life is not always politically correct and pretty, it is real. Life isn’t pretty, and cancer destroys a person.”

The combination of the photo and the post sums up the battle that young Drake has been going through for so long, and while it’s not pretty…

it’s real and it presents a very real image of what it is like to have to witness a loved one fight the horrible disease.

And yet, Drake is still standing and still fighting. There is no doubt that he is a very brave boy.

In the post, Jessica went on to say some very heartbreaking, yet truthful words…

“This was this morning after carrying Drake to the bathroom. Yes, he is in a pull up because 75% of the time he can’t control his bathroom habits.

This is skin and bones, because I have to beg him to eat ONE green bean for supper, or drink a cup of water throughout the day.

This is having your son sleep with you at night because he is afraid of something happening and being alone, and by something I mean dying.

This is having middle of the night conversations with a ten year old, asking if he dies will he go to heaven and will he see his dad there and be able to talk and play with him.”

The post was so popular that it received 47,000 comments and 86,000 shares so far.

One commenter in particular offered inspiring words of hope during the family’s bleak time…

"For anyone battling cancer or enduring chemotherapy. For anyone going through this horrible disease. It is about to get…

“At the age of 22 I was diagnosed with leukemia, I’m 40 now. Just a few months ago I found out I had renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer) and they took 30% of it but yet once again cancer free.

There is life after all the treatments and my thoughts and prayers are with you!!!!”
