Lower back pain is a daily obstacle to your plans. It always surfaces when you least expect it, when you’re trying to carry all your groceries to the car or playing sports. When you’re younger, it’s just an inconvenience, but the older you get, the more disabling it becomes. Sciatica, one of the main culprits, occurs when the sciatic nerve, which runs down your back and into your legs, is pinched or compressed by a herniated disk, PositiveMed says. More common back pain usually has to do with muscles that are strained beyond their abilities.
To lessen your aches and pains, physical therapist Manu Kalia explains you need to exercise your piriformis muscle, as shown in the video below: A tennis ball, or two wrapped together, will serve to massage your muscle if you lie on it and let it roll across your glutes. The piriformis muscle is located quite near the sciatic nerve, and this exercise will help with pain in that area. Make sure you vary the positions for a wider area of effect.
The Mayo Clinic suggests a few other things, such as hot and cold packs and ibuprofen, to help with the pain if exercising is not your cup of tea.
Of course, this tip serves to help with symptoms of sciatica, not the causes. If a herniated disk or malformation is the issue, you should absolutely see a doctor and have the problem looked at by a professional.
